EastEnders to ‘recreate’ iconic storyline that gripped the nation – but fans divided

EastEnders could be set to replicate a major TV moment in soap history that brought in nearly 30 million viewers

EastEnders fans reckon the soap is about to recreate one of its most iconic storylines.

Over in the soap this week, David Wicks (Michael French) made his shock return. During Thursday’s episode (October 10), things took a dramatic turn when he caught his ex Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) and her lover Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) in the act.

Fans will recall Cindy has been having an affair with her ex-husband’s son for the past few months. And after David caught the pair, Cindy was quick to pull David aside, desperate to stop him from telling her fiancé Ian (Adam Woodyatt).

Cindy took David to Beale’s Eels, where Anna (Molly Rainford) and Freddie (Bobby Brazier) were finishing up birdwatching. Cindy ushered the pair out, but Freddie told her he needed to finish recording and sort things out.

Cindy didn’t care though, and insisted they leave. Once Anna and Freddie left, Cindy and David had a showdown, with Cindy opening up about why she was having an affair.

However, fans pointed out how Freddie’s recorder was left on and recorded their entire conversation. Now, viewers reckon the soap is set to recreate the iconic Sharongate storyline that brought in 25.3 million viewers at its peak.

The confession was being recorded

Nearly 30 million fans watched the Queen Vic moment in 1994 that saw Sharon Mitchell’s (Letitia Dean) affair with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) exposed.

At the time, Sharon was married to Grant (Ross Kemp). He managed to get a taped recording of Sharon confessing to sleeping with his brother and ripping off his clothes.

And getting his revenge, Grant showed up at the pub where Sharon was hosting Phil and Kathy’s engagement party. But in front of everyone, Grant replaced the music with Sharon’s confession – leaving residents in shock.

And nearly 20 years later, and fans are certain the soap is about to do the same with Cindy and Junior’s affair. Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “Cindy and David are talking with the microphone recording?! SharonGate 2.0 incoming!.”

Someone else said: “1994 had Sharongate. Get ready for Cindygate in 2024.” A third penned: “It’s gonna be Sharongate all over again isn’t it.” Another penned: “OH MY GOD! Bobby’s bird recording equipment has got the whole conversation between Cindy & David! How is this going to play out?”

However, other fans slammed the twist and wrote: “How predictable.” I knew that recording equipment would still be recording everything.” Someone else wrote: “We saw that coming.”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
