An innocent Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier) could be the one to reveal Cindy Beale’s (Michelle Collins) affair with Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) in EastEnders.

In tonight’s episode of the BBC One soap, Cindy and David Wicks (Michael French) made their way to Beale’s Eels for a chat after David found Cindy and Junior kissing down the side of the pub.

When they arrived, they found Anna Knight (Molly Rainford) and Freddie hanging out with some bird recording devices. Freddie has become quite invested in identifying different bird sounds, and recently purchased a powerful recording device hoping to find some rare ones.

Freddie told David and Cindy to leave everything well alone and then he left. As the two characters got chatting about Cindy’s affair, they completely forgot his device was still recording.

Not only has this picked up Cindy’s confession, but it has more than likely picked up the conversation David had outside with son Joe Wicks, which confirmed David is granddad to a young woman called Holly.

Now these scenes have aired, fans of the soap can’t help but wonder if history may repeat itself during the 40th anniversary next February.

Taking to social media platform X, users are curious as to whether the 90s storyline dubbed ‘Sharongate’ could air once more.

Sharongate saw Grant (Ross Kemp) discover Sharon’s (Letitia Dean) affair with Phil (Steve McFadden) via a tape recording. A similar structure was then repeated in 2007, when Stacey (Lacey Turner) and Max’s (Jake Wood) affair was revealed via a clip from a DVD.

So iconic.

But given it’s October, could Freddie really keep this confession a secret for another four months?

Discussing the upcoming anniversary, which will feature a live episode, producer Chris Clenshaw said: ‘The 40th anniversary is a milestone event for EastEnders, and we have been planning this week for a long time to ensure that it’s a week full of drama and surprises.’

‘We have many more nods to our history to come which will all build up to our momentous anniversary week.‘This time, as well as going live, we are adding an extra twist and for the very first time in the history of the show and as a gift to the viewers, we are giving the audience the power to have their say in choosing the outcome of one of our storylines.

‘Whilst we’re still keeping the finite details of the 40th close to our chest, I can promise that it will be an unmissable week full of shocking twists that will change Albert Square, and the lives of those who live in it, forever.’
