Emmerdale set to air soap’s first transgender wedding ‘in sign of times’ but bigots are determined to overshadow it
And the role Claudette Hubbard will have on the big day revealed
EMMERDALE will feature its first transgender wedding this spring.
ITV has the ceremony pencilled in for next month after Amy Wyatt proposed to Matty Barton last year.
But trans Matty — played by Ash Palmisciano, 34 — will be upset when vicar’s mother Claudette Hubbard tries to block his wedding.
A source said: “The plot marks a sign of the times.
“But the wedding won’t come without drama as some are determined their bigotry overshadows the couple’s big day.”
It comes after Matty returned to the village in 2018 shocking his family who thought he was still identifying as Hannah.
His family struggled with his transition but came around and have supported him through it ever since.
On New Year’s Eve 2018, Matty was the victim of a brutal transphobic attack by his ex and pals.
He was beaten and was stripped by the thugs in a humiliating attack.
Actor Ash Palmisciano previously opened up about being attacked for being trans before.
He said: “I’ve been beaten in the streets until I can’t stand or see.
“A guy approached me in the street.
“There I was on my own, smiling.
“He approached me carefree, ‘Are you a tranny? Because you look like one to me.’
“I didn’t reply, I just looked down at my feet, to which he said it again, this time with intent and on repeat.
“He continued with hate.”
