In a recent Soap From the Box podcast, Katherine Dow Blyton shared her experience following the departure of her Emmerdale character. Reflecting on the aftermath of Harriet’s death, Katherine revealed receiving numerous messages from fans questioning the whereabouts of her character’s body.
Despite feeling sorry for Harriet’s unresolved exit storyline, the Emmerdale soap actress acknowledged the nature of showbiz. Additionally, she highlighted that Harriet’s exit coincided with the first ‘super soap week’ she had participated in. The star admitted to initial shock and disbelief when she heard about her character being written off.
The actress recalls sitting for ten seconds, thinking if she has done something wrong. She said, “I tried to get out of the building, sat in my car, and burst into tears.” Regardless of the fact that she was ready to move on, she couldn’t gather up the courage to leave a steady job. So, she ultimately appreciated the opportunity for closure.
Talking about her character, the Emmerdale icon delved into Harriet’s character development in Emmerdale. She remarked that returning to a police officer role later in her career felt out of place. However, her initial charm and humor seemed to diminish as the storyline progressed.
Blyton expressed concern over the current trend towards sensationalism in soap operas. She questioned the necessity for constant conflict, murder, and affairs. The legendary actress also suggested a more diverse picturisation of characters.
Ultimately, she commented, “It just seems more of a competition between soaps to do the best stunts and the best trauma and tragedies rather than characters.” For more Emmerdale updates,
