Fans are chomping at the bit to find out what happened to Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly) all those years ago that led to such a catastrophic breakdown of her relationship with her parents in Emmerdale. Buckle up, here we go.
Some have speculated she was abused by her dad, others by her mum, but whatever happened, the secret is bubbling under the surface now that her dad Anthony (Nicholas Day) and daughter Steph (Georgia Jay) are in town.
Ruby is barely coping with the weight of her guilty secret – that she slept with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) while Moira (Natalie J Robb) was having a brain op – on top of the confrontation of her traumatising childhood. It’ll get worse all because of a simple photo.
During a mother daughter moment, Steph convinced Ruby to look through the box of memories her grandma had left her. But coming across a picture of herself aged 15 in a school uniform caused Ruby to freeze. What had the image triggered?
One of the reasons given for Ruby’s estrangement from her parents is that they disproved of Caleb Miligan (William Ash). But during a conversation with Brenda Walker (Lesley Dunlop), Anthony learns from a slip of Brenda’s tongue that Caleb cheated on Ruby with Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh).
This proves that Anthony was right all along – Caleb is a deadbeat.
It’s a desperately sad realisation for him. He is enraged about the discovery and confronts Caleb about the affair.
Ruby – guilty of having cheated with Cain herself – tries to head off Anthony, but he won’t drop it. She’s left perturbed by how persistent he is.
It leads to a reconciliation of sorts between Ruby and Steph. But with Anthony so insistent, Ruby is left feeling uneasy and is mentally sent flying back to the time when her parents treated her so badly.
This sparks a flashback episode, triggered by Steph finding a photo of Ruby on her 16th birthday. Ruby pretends she doesn’t remember, but it’s clear she remembers it as if it were yesterday.
