Former EastEnders actor Shona McGarty has spoken out about the potential of Whitney Dean returning to Albert Square.
McGarty’s final scenes aired earlier this year, with Whitney making peace with Lauren Branning before heading off to start afresh with Dolly and Britney, leaving unfaithful Zack Hudson and untrustworthy Bianca Jackson behind.
Speaking to The Sun, the actor said that she’s definitely open for returning to the BBC One soap — but it won’t be any time soon.
“I left on the bus and not under it, so for that I’m really grateful,” she joked. “I would absolutely go back to EastEnders — it’s 16 years of creating a family, I grew up on that show.
“I’ve got a really good relationship with EastEnders, the door’s open but at the moment not yet.”
The soap’s 40th anniversary is coming up in February, while one of the biggest ongoing stories at the moment is Bianca trying to take down Reiss Colwell for the murder of his wife and framing of Sonia.
When asked if she could return for the anniversary/the ending of the Reiss storyline, McGarty said she “wouldn’t say no” to the opportunity.
“I definitely would because I would do anything to celebrate EastEnders,” she said, adding: “I feel as Whitney I should go and rescue [Bianca]. Whitney would get her out.”
At the moment, the actor is focusing on theatre and music and said she hasn’t had time to watch the soap religiously, but she does keep tabs on the latest developments via social media.
The actor also shot down the possibility of appearing on another soap, stating: “My loyalty is with EastEnders always.”
