EastEnders icon Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) was left in a bit of a pickle earlier this week when he lost his job at the bookies.

While in charge of the betting shop, Alfie decided to close early in order to have an important chat with son Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) at the cafe. Unfortunately, his bosses arrived and realised what he’d done, firing him immediately.

The soap stalwart has been at a loss of what to do, with the local paper giving him nothing in the form of job vacancies.

Fortunately, Tommy was on hand in tonight’s episode to point him in the right direction, by showing him an online listing for a managerial position at the Minute Mart.

Alfie was quickly accepted for an interview, but when he arrived, he was shocked by who was waiting for him.

As Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) and Nugget Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) greeted him, Alfie laughed, believing that they were playing a prank on him.

However, they remained very serious, and it soon dawned on him that they really would be conducting the interview.

Viewers will know that Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) recently rewrote his will, leaving all of his businesses to grandchildren Nugget and Avani.

Because of this, they have taken control of staffing at the Minute Mart – something that left a sour taste in Alfie’s mouth.

Later, Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) found Alfie hiding in the pub, and was less than impressed to discover that he wasn’t planning on taking the job.

As Alfie explained that he didn’t want to have kids paying his wages, Kat scoffed at the idea of him worrying about his dignity, before Alfie went on to reveal that they wanted him to go to Birmingham for a management course.

When Kat pointed out that it would be more hassle going to the jobcentre and that she would be fine looking after Tommy alone, Alfie relented and agreed to take the job.

Will he regret his decision?
