Whilst the finer details are being kept closely under wraps, the incident is expected to change the course of life in the Dales for a number of residents.

Producer Laura Shaw remained tight-lipped about which families would be featured and when exactly it would take place but did confirm that the potentially catastrophic aftermath would be “long-running”.

She also refused to confirm if the character impacted by the incident the most would die or survive.

Speaking to The Sun and other press, Laura said: “We’re gonna see an accident happen that’s gonna affect two big family groups. It’ll connect those family groups together.

“We’ll see someone in some really serious medical jeopardy, whether they live or die we’ll have to see.

“What I can tell you is that the ripples and repercussions from that accident will be very long-lasting and life-changing for a number of our villagers.”

Further details on the huge new story are expected to be revealed in due course.

The soap’s boss also revealed the other stories that would be taking centre stage across the summer at the press event.

Dawn and Billy Fletcher will appear front and centre as they deal with the incredibly heartbreaking news that baby Evan has leukaemia.

The story has been described as every parent’s “worst nightmare” and will kick off in just weeks.

Laura said of the plot: “We’re going to see their world totally rocked when, almost out of nowhere, Evan is diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).

“ALL is one of the most common childhood leukaemias. I think there’s 650 children and young adults diagnosed with that every year in the UK.

“We’ll see how this affects Billy and Dawn’s relationship, the wider family in Kim and Will, and all of their friends.

“There’s also the financial pressure that looking after a child long-term like that can put on a whole family. That’s going to be a big story for us going forward.”

Elsewhere, Tom King and Belle Dingle will see their romance continue to crumble as his abusive behaviour shows no signs of slowing down.

Lovers Mandy Dingle and Paddy Kirk will also tie the knot in a series of specially created episodes that Laura teased would not follow the traditional format of an Emmerdale episode.

Kerry Wyatt’s secret will also be revealed in full as well as questions surrounding the identity of Ella Forster expected to be answered.
