Were Emmerdale’s Charles and Manpreet engaged before? Couple’s forgotten history and doomed wedding
Emmerdale's Manpreet Sharma rejected Charles Anderson's proposal on Wednesday night, where she discussed their history and past engagement
Emmerdale revisited a past storyline on Wednesday night amid new heartbreak.
Earlier this week, Claudette Anderson unsubtly suggested that vicar son Charles Anderson and partner Manpreet Sharma would make a better impression on the new bishop if they were married. In true soap style, things went from bad to worse when Charles ended up implying to the bishop that they do have plans to get wed, leaving the village vicar under pressure to propose.
On Wednesday night, after plucking up the courage, Charles decided to propose in The Woolpack. The proposal left Manpreet utterly bewildered and due to taking place in the pub, the doctor felt pressured especially as eager barmaid Gail announced the duo were engaged before a reply had even been revealed.
Later, Manpreet sat Charles down, admitting she felt pressured and that she hadn’t realised he was being serious about the engagement, thinking it was just show for the bishop. The doctor even brought up their past, pointing out: “We’ve been there before, remember, I ditched you at the altar… not my finest hour!”

Charles pointed out that was the past but Manpreet insisted that she loves their relationship as it is and why “spoil it” by getting married. Charles was clearly hurt by the remark as he stormed off upset and said he wasn’t going to force Manpreet to marry him.
Longtime viewers will remember Manpreet and Charles’ past but for new fans, the past bombshell may have been a shock. Manpreet and Charles’ past was exposed in 2021 just weeks after the arrival of the latter as the village’s new vicar. When the pair laid eyes on each other in the village, it was clear they knew each other and shared a past.
Charles soon revealed he had believed Manpreet was dead for years, and that they had been in a relationship together – while she was still married to her ex-husband Dennis. The biggest shock came when Charles revealed her name was Saira, or so he thought, and they were due to get married before she vanished on their wedding day.
Manpreet was living a double life, and while Manpreet was her real name she pretended to be Saira, hiding the fact she had a marriage and a family before deciding to ditch Charles. With Charles hurt and Manpreet not wanting to get engaged, could this be another split for the on-off couple?
