Two families will be left bereft in Emmerdale later this year as one resident ends up in a terrible accident which leaves them fighting for their life.

The ITV soap is gearing up for a massive week, which features the wedding of Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) and Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson), but beyond that there is much more to come.

In typical Emmerdale fashion, fans can expect tragic scenes, with an accident involving one much-loved character set to rip two iconic clans apart.

‘There will be an accident that will affect two big family groups’, Emmerdale’s reigning boss Laura Shaw shared with Metro.co.uk while discussing what’s ahead later in the year.

‘We’ll see someone in very serious medical jeopardy.

‘Whether they live or die we’ll have to see! Ripples and repercussions from that accident will be very long lasting and life changing for a number of our villagers.’

The question is: just who is it that’s left in such mortal danger? What’s more, which two families will be impacted by the tragedy to come?

The eponymous village and all those who dwell there are only just starting to recover from the tragic death of Heath Hope (Sebastian Dowling), who perished in a deadly car accident on New Year’s Eve.

This mystery new accident isn’t the only major storyline set to rock the village in the coming months, however, as a baby is set to be diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

‘AAL is one of the most common childhood leukaemias, with 650 children and young adults diagnosed with it in the UK each year,’ continued Laura. ‘With this story we wanted to show the stress and strain it can put on a family – a long term illness like that.

‘What we’ll see is that the roles are changed overnight and out of nowhere we’ll see how those involved are affected.’

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
